Good Things Come to Those Who Sweat - Dec. '22 RHY Mural

battleaj

25-hour mural completed during the business's closed hours.

All materials were stashed between work sessions, and the space remained fully functional!

What a refreshing and satisfying way to kick off winter break. Real Hot Yoga in Johnson City commissioned a text mural for the end of the main hallway space at their facility. RHY's lovely owner, Kristy Hanes, had a clear vision for her wall, and I am honored to be the designer to help her achieve the look.

The text placement was perfect for the layout of the building, but the current color palette wasn't dramatic enough for the contrast we sought. After our initial consult, I created a few mock-up images to explore our color possibilities.

This is the select few that were shown as options to Kristy; there were about 30 more combinations of fonts, graphics, and colors I toyed with. We met again to finalize the design, and we decided to paint the entire wall black and amplify the contrast as much as possible. The font choice was also decisive, but the period would be deleted. Perhaps the most challenging component of the design was the graphic shape; I explained in the 6th design (the one we finally chose) the droplets 'start' at the word "those," which would create a cute visual connection to the subject and the quote.

Kristy's specific vision made it relatively simple for us to move past the schematic design phases quickly. The next task was precisely scaling the text to fit the wall. Luckily, as an INTD student at ETSU, I have access to several incredible tools, but the laser printer served my purpose perfectly. I transferred our chosen configuration into Adobe Illustrator and printed a stencil that I would use to preview the design and pencil in an outline of the text.

Kristy picked the colors "Nano White" & "Black" by Behr. I opted to use an additional layer of primer on the text before the white to accentuate the stark hue further. Once I collected our chosen supplies, the painting process began! Preserving the trim and setting crisp lines on adjacent walls was my primary goal with tape.

From this point on, I time-lapsed the major steps and consolidated them into this brief video!

This mural was a fun opportunity, and I would love to paint more in this style. If you would like to see the project in completion: click here to view RHY Mural in my portfolio.
